Welcome to Hogbens!
Quality used saddles for all.
Owing to my daughter and resident techie moving away to college this website isn't updated as regularly as it previously has been. I have a large number of saddles that aren't on here and while I do my best with what is listed some of them may have moved on. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me as regards anything you see here or something you want and can't find- it is an ever evolving collection!
Which Rabbit Hole Did I Spring From?
When I was 9, I discovered a saddle in the local junk shop - rather an unusual one with a tartan covered panel. Sadly I couldn't gather enough pennies to buy it, but then I only intended to take it apart and put it back together anyway. My fascination with the 3D construction of saddles and horses backs had begun and by the age of 14 on I was on the waiting list to train to be a Saddler.
Over the years I have worked with horses in many disciplines and several different countries, including riding schools, trekking centres, horse and carriage weddings, point to pointers, teaching at a city farm, polo ponies both in the UK and USA, eventers, dressage horses, hunters, driving horses in Belgium, pony clubs, mares and foals, youngsters and educating rescue horses. Every hour has increased my insight into helping horses and riders to get the best from their tack.
I completed 3 years at Cordwainers Technical College (then in London, still the best training ground for saddlers) in 1982 with a Silver Curriers Company Medal for the best student in the Leatherwork Department and a number of other accolades and prizes. By then I could make a saddle and put it on a horse but the real work was just about to begin. I worked with a number of very experienced saddlers across the UK and USA, learning how to do the real job - not always quite the same as college ways! As the years went by I established a workshop in a large livery yard/riding school and from there moved into a shop in West Sussex were I was one of the first agents for Albion and worked closely with them particularly on design and fit of dressage saddles. I continue to keep up with modern research and development in the area of saddle construction and fit and am an avid follower of the Saddle Research trust.
Over the course of more than 30 years I have fitted in the region of 3000 horses. I try to carry a large enough stock to be able to offer a choice to most customers. I have worked with countless horse owners at all levels and I know that while not everyone needs a Rolls Royce they all need a well fitting, safe saddle at a sensible price. To encourage customers to have a saddle fitting visit and a bit of advice I charge only the cost of petrol if they purchase a saddle of €200 or more, but if you want to go it alone you're very welcome. I offer a 14 day money back or exchange happiness guarantee to enable you to be sure of your purchase in your own time, and to thoroughly try it for all your needs.
